Social Sciences

Sociology, in the department of Social Science at Harris Academy Beckenham, offers a rigorous curriculum.

We teach the AQA specification but supplement this with the students' own experiences. This is complemented by the opportunity to consolidate, bridge and expand their knowledge through, for example, our Mindfulness and Wellbeing Society, trips to galleries, theatres, prisons, courts, museums and lectures, as well as research and literature reviews.

The course gives students a useful preparation for studying at university, starting work, or giving them a life-long interest in the subject.

All Sociology students at HABE develop transferable skills to help their employment prospects. These skills include independence of thought, critical analysis, investigative and presentation skills.

Sociology students will learn to synthesise complex arguments in line with theoretical paradigms and empirical evidence, before arriving at a conclusion; in addition, they will develop competence and confidence in literacy and oracy, mathematical and problem-solving skills, which are embedded in all aspects of the curriculum.

In Sociology, the dissemination of content is done in an enjoyable and engaging manner with practitioners employing a range of teachings styles that promotes, facilitates and enhances the learning experiences of all students. This results in students feeling supported, stretched, and challenged.
