At Harris Academy Beckenham Sixth Form, we are committed to providing every student with a rich, rigorous, and transformative educational experience. Our teaching and learning standards reflect our belief that excellence is within reach of all students.
Our teachers bring expert subject knowledge and outstanding pedagogical practice to every lesson. Across all subjects, students follow a carefully sequenced curriculum designed to build deep understanding and equip them for success beyond Sixth Form. Students are always able to articulate how their current studies connect to the broader curriculum journey and their future goals.
In our classrooms, students are challenged to think critically, discuss ideas with confidence, and engage with complex concepts. High standards of literacy, extended writing, and independent inquiry are central to all we do. Feedback is meaningful and timely, systematically addressing misconceptions and identifying next steps for growth.
Assessment
Assessment is an integral part of every subject, combining formal Academy examinations, subject-based tasks, and regular teacher-student dialogue.
Year 12 students sit induction assessments at the end of their first half term, with formal examinations in February and June.
Year 13 students sit two mock examination series, in November and March, ahead of their final A Level examinations from May.
Students on vocational pathways begin externally assessed units from January of Year 12, alongside coursework components completed across both years and subject to external moderation.
Independent Study & Homework
We expect Sixth Form students to invest five hours of independent study per subject, per week - a commitment that reflects the demands of the Sixth Form curriculum. Ample quiet study space is available throughout the Academy, and structured study support is provided for any student who needs help managing their workload.
Homework across all subjects amounts to five hours per week and is designed to be purposeful and intellectually stretching. Where possible, tasks are preparatory in nature, enabling deeper classroom engagement. Students are taught to research independently and read widely, with teachers drawing on that wider study to enrich discussion and deepen understanding.
